Safadi and Sweden’s Linde discuss preparations for the international conference …
(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and his Swedish counterpart Ann Linde held a preparatory meeting in New York on Wednesday evening for the international conference on UNRWA.
During the meeting, Safadi stressed the importance of the international community in providing the necessary support to the agency to continue providing life-saving services to approximately 5.7 million Palestinian refugees in the areas of health, l aid and education under his UN mandate, according to a foreign ministry statement. .
The Minister stressed that “UNRWA has a central role which can neither be compromised nor reduced”. He praised Sweden’s important role in mobilizing international support for the agency as part of its partnership with the Kingdom.
He also expressed his gratitude to all partners for their support to UNRWA, stressing the importance of joint action to close the financial gap facing the agency.
The Deputy Prime Minister also called for reaching consensus on long-term funding mechanisms that will prevent the disruption of basic services that UNRWA provides to Palestinian refugees in its five areas of operation.
A meeting co-chaired by Safadi and Linde, held on the sidelines of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, issued a final statement ahead of an international conference on UNRWA under Jordanian-Swedish presidency in Belgium in November .
The ministerial meeting saw the participation of representatives from Egypt, the European Commission, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom , the United States and UNRWA Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini.
Participants highlighted the main role of UNRWA in supporting Palestinian refugees and strengthening stability in the region.
They also stressed that the next UNRWA conference will be an opportunity to review the agency’s efforts and present its plan to member states.
The conference will ensure effective action in the implementation of its tasks and the modernization of its work plans within the framework of the UN mandate.
Participants stressed the importance of achieving a lasting solution to the financial crises facing UNRWA, which threaten the rights of Palestinian refugees to a decent life.
Participants stressed that UNRWA must be funded with sustainable funding, primarily through long-term, multi-year core funding from a more diverse donor base.
